A pinched nerve in your lower back can cause intense pain that radiates from your lumbar region down the back of one leg, traveling from the buttock along the thigh and even reaching the calf and foot.
The pain caused by a pinched nerve may start suddenly or develop gradually. Typically, it presents as sharp, shooting discomfort resembling an electric shock. Moving the affected leg, back, or other involved areas often worsens the pain.
This pain might be spread evenly along the leg, but there are usually specific spots where it feels more severe. Along with the pain, numbness or tingling sensations often occur along the sciatic nerves, the longest nerve bundle in the body, which run from the lower back down the backs of both legs.
What Causes a Pinched Nerve?
A pinched nerve happens when pressure or irritation affects the nerve roots that form the sciatic nerve. Various conditions can cause this pressure, including a herniated disc, narrowing of the spinal canal (known as spinal stenosis), or, less commonly, infections or tumors.
The sciatic nerve is the body’s largest and longest nerve, measuring about three-quarters of an inch thick in adults. It originates in the sacral plexus, a nerve network located in the lower back (lumbosacral spine).
This nerve and its branches control both motor and sensory functions—movement and sensation—in the thigh, knee, calf, ankle, foot, and toes.
When the sciatic nerve becomes compressed or “pinched,” it can cause pain that follows these nerve pathways. This is why pinched nerve pain often spreads or radiates to other areas of your body.
Common causes of pinched nerve pain include bulging or herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, piriformis syndrome, pregnancy, spinal stenosis, spinal tumors or infections, and trauma.
Each of these conditions can put pressure on the sciatic nerve or nearby nerve roots in the lower back. This compression is what leads to your pain and other symptoms.
